A Traveling Workshop Inspiring Diverse Documentary Filmmakers

We are a pop-up-style workshop that offers apprenticeships, mentorship, and skills-building opportunities for aspiring, underrepresented non-fiction visual storytellers.

WHAT WE DO

Skills-Based Workshops

Pop Up Docs™ partners with community-based organizations, community colleges, and universities to introduce students (14-25) to documentary filmmaking techniques. Our innovative “bookmobile meets Masterclass” approach provides custom learning solutions that will leave your community inspired by the stories in their backyard!

A Learning Community

At Pop Up Docs™, students will join a FREE community of talented, diverse storytellers that fosters empowerment and encouragement throughout their documentary filmmaking journey. Members and partners can also subscribe to unlock even more value through our curated and exclusive educational content library.

Explore Career Pathways

From day one, students will engage in hands-on experiences supplemented by authentic assessment. Upon completion of our workshop, our students will have two to four exemplary visual products that can be used to launch their portfolios, preparing them for college or jobs in visual media.

Pop Up Docs™ aims to democratize storytelling by leveraging technology and person-to-person interactions to deliver highly individualized educational experiences that meet the unique needs of every learner, ultimately preparing them for opportunities in higher education and careers in visual media.

LIFTxVoices' inaugural workshop highlighted Detroit's trusted messenger and beloved columnist Darren Nichols (Detroit Free Press). The LIFT x Voices programming is a public-facing data-driven storytelling project that allows researchers from the LIFT project to collaborate with media makers to visualize the data we collect for the general public. During our first workshop, ten Michigan high school students learned how to research, light, prepare external audio capture, compose a camera, and manipulate LED lighting to produce a short documentary-style interview about the named trusted messenger and Detroit Free Press columnist Darren Nichols.
